'Tis the Season...

All I Want for Christmas is…

Have you ever wondered why books make the best Christmas gifts?

1.     Books aren’t perishable.

2.     The best stories never grow old.

3.     A book is pretty much a gift for life.

4.     Books are the gift that keep on giving.

To help with your selection we have a few suggestions:

Introducing Guest Author Interviews!

Happy June to all our Pen Dames readers! We are starting a new feature this month ~ Guest Author Interviews! We're excited to introduce you to some of our favorite authors and hope you will love their books as much as we do.

Our first interview is with the fabulous Sydney Brianna, who will give away a free ebook of her novel, Druid, to one lucky reader. Just contact Sydney at one of the links listed below (Website, Facebook, etc.) and tell her you heard about Druid from the Pen Dames. She will select one commenter to receive a digital copy. Hurry! Contest closes one week from the date of this post.

Sydney writes steamy romance mixed with epic fantasy and combines contemporary times with historical eras. How can she do that? Magic, of course!

Here's the blurb for Druid:

Through his work with a protective agency of immortals, the Custodes Pacis, Cináed spent centuries looking for the heir that would deliver the world from Ragnarök. His skills as a Druid Master prepared him for everything about this mission, except one thing: finding Scarlet. The mortal who turned out to be much more than just a being with a special lineage to gods.

At forty years old, civil engineering and gardening was about as exciting as it got for Scarlet. Surprises were a thing of the past, or so she thought, until the day her new purpose came strolling through her office door. The choice was hers. Save the world without him, or watch it fall away nestled in the arms of the millennium-old Druid Master worth risking everything for.

Love, and an apocalypse. Why not?

And here's our interview with Sydney:

Pen Dames: What books were your favorites as a child?

Sydney:  I read classics, mostly. Dickens, Dumas, Austen, Poe, Shakespeare, and the like.

Pen Dames: How and when did your writing journey begin?

Sydney:  I’ve dabbled with writing over the years, but I didn’t become serious about it until I had my hysterectomy in 2018. The first couple of weeks of my recovery, I must have DNF’d (Did Not Finish) seven Romance books that I started. None of the heroines were relatable. It was a topic of discussion between me and my thirty-something reading friends prior to my surgery, but after I had the procedure, it was glaring…and irritating. I couldn’t get away from the twenty-something virgins. As a forty-year-old mother and wife, at that moment, I wanted to read about heroines like me. So, I decided to write them. I write paranormal stories, and all of my immortal characters transition in their late thirties, early forties. My characters have pasts. They are a testament to the fact that older is smart and sexy.

Pen Dames: What genre is your book? What do you like about writing in that genre?

Sydney: Paranormal Erotic Romance.

Paranormal Romance gives me the space to explore my imagination. To create grounded characters who are relatable, yet spectacularly different. To craft a world of fantasy where one can escape the humdrum of everyday life.

Erotic Romance writing gives us a chance to claim sexuality and be proud of it. I love the ability to create a gateway for someone else to feel welcome without judgment in their desires to imagine scenarios that may not ever happen to them. Sex is an important part of the human experience, and Erotic Romance gives us the permission to explore love and lust openly. It’s quite freeing to write it.

Pen Dames: Is your book part of a series or a standalone? If it is part of a series, briefly describe the series.

Sydney: Druid is part of the Custodes Pacis series, which is Latin for Guardians of Peace. The series follows a team of seven immortal warriors from different cultures, races, and time periods. They are a special team working against the destruction of Earth’s inhabitants from different religious apocalypses.

While the fantasy plot unfolds for our paranormal characters, each book also highlights a different love story, with Druid focusing on Cináed and Scarlet.

All of my lovers vary in appearance, species, and origins. Scarlet represents a thick, forty-something mother whose son has moved on to college. She is a successful, professional divorcee, who has thick thighs, and yes, had a hysterectomy; and our millennium-year-old Scottish Druid warrior can’t get enough of her.

Each book features a smart, strong, and relatable bad-ass heroine.

Pen Dames: What writing projects do you have on the horizon?

Sydney: I have published two of the seven books in this series, with the third coming on July 31, 2023. My goal is to publish one every three months until July 2024. Beyond that, I have notes logged for three standalone books.

What Creeps You Out? Happy Halloween!

Everybody's creeped out by something, right? The Pen Dames are no exception. Some things just plain terrify us.

Let's take Loretta Rogers. She is a fearless and prolific author who skillfully gives her readers chills with her paranormal romance and detective stories. Here's what she has to say:

Rattlesnakes

"I am deathly afraid of snakes. It doesn’t matter what kind, harmless or not, what color, alive or fakey rubber, it’s still a snake, and to me, all good snakes are dead ones. Why? Because I was bitten by a rattlesnake, spent thirteen days in the hospital, and nearly had to have my leg amputated.

A long time ago, a friend of my hubby, knowing my fear, thought he’d play a practical joke and threw a (live) baby corn snake at me. Before I fainted, I think the entire neighborhood heard me scream. Hubby cold-cocked the guy who sported a swollen nose and a black eye for several days.

Because of this experience, many of my books include snakes. I guess it’s my way of trying to conquer my fear—not!"

Loretta C. Rogers, author of The Witching Moon

Yikes, Loretta! I think your fear of snakes is more than justified! And three cheers for hubby being your champion. That guy had it coming.

Next up, we have the mysterious and talented Flossie Benton Rogers. She writes spine-tingling fantasy, and her book of poetry based on mythological creatures is brilliant.

THINGS THAT SCARE MY SOCKS OFF

Flossie Benton Rogers:

"Octopus holes / suction cups. Other similar hole clusters are also repulsive but octopi even more so because they move and curl and uncurl and look gruesome. I suppose this is a mild case of trypophobia, which means I try not to see it.

Long incongruous tails and things that resemble tails, such as the arms of OCTOPI. When my grandsons, the Snickerdoodles, were younger, they played a video game at my house called Little Big Planet. The game allowed a high degree of customization. The Snickerdoodles chortled in delight at my horrified reactions to their pinning long scary tails on everything in sight.

Rictus smile or sardonic grin. At a young age I saw the 1961 movie, Mister Sardonicus, in which a man’s face froze into a rictus smile as he was robbing his father’s grave. Creeped me out. Oddly enough, the smiling chauffeur in Dan Curtis’ 1976 Burnt Offerings (Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis) didn’t scare me, but the rictus smile on one of the main characters near the end of the movie did. No, I’ll not be viewing 2022’s Smile movie.

 Other shuddery turnoffs:

The sensation of falling through the air.

Being confined in a closed space such as a train or MRI.

Snakes (let’s face it, they’re long slithering TAILS)."

Here are more book offerings from our fellow Pen Dames.

Who doesn't like witches at this time of year? Another one of our Pen Dames, gifted Katherine Eddinger Smits, delights her readers with stories about mermaids and sexy mermen. And she has just the thing for Witch Story Enthusiasts.

Our southern charmer, Linda Tillis, writes amazing historical romances filled with love and adventure. Who doesn't like to indulge in a little time travel at Halloween?

That leaves me, Jennifer Taylor. What creeps me out? Those innocent, adorable squirrels. Eek! It's their tails that give me the willies, always quivering and shaking. They hold a grudge against me for some reason. On my daily walk down the driveway, I get pelted with pine cones and acorns. They must sense my scorn.

I have a fear of those drive-through car washes. Don't ask me why, but I cannot drive through them. I do feel a bit of success, because I recently conquered my fear of pneumatic tubes.

Here's for something really scary: Like most of us, I imagine, I have a fear of being buried alive. In my first historical romance, Mercy of the Moon, someone is buried alive but survives--and that's just in the first chapter. You can only imagine the ramifications of that----wait! You can read the book.

All three books in my Rhythm of the Moon series are on sale for 99 cents until Thursday night. Just in time for Halloween.

Some authors write about what they're most afraid of. Maybe it's a way of dealing with it, or maybe we're all just a little bit creepy.

Ghostober-What's in Your Family Albums

Halloween is all about dressing up as ghosts and goblins, favorite movie stars, sci-fi characters, and other fun costumes. For children it’s going from door-to-door shouting “Trick or Treat,” and then loading their bags with candy from generous homeowners. But this blog isn’t about creative costumes or sweet treats. It’s about ghosts—a different kind of ghosts.

Ever thought you were alone, but the chill down your spine begged otherwise? Ever told yourself the noises in your house at night are just the walls “settling”?

Do I have your attention?

Here’s a question for you dear readers. Do you believe in ghosts? Once upon a time ghosts were considered scary, supernatural specters. You know something that goes bump in the night.

If you don’t believe in ghosts you’re not alone. These days, most people do not believe such spirits exist. Two hundred years ago, or perhaps longer, when a person passed away the only images left of the deceased were mostly in the memories of those who knew them. Only a few rich and famous people could afford to have their portraits painted in those days, so most people’s features and images vanished without a trace once the generations who remembered them died, too.

Okay, so whether you believe in ghosts or not, flip through an old family photo album and reckon with the images staring back at you. They are not frightening images. Most likely that old photo album is filled with pictures of people long gone, possibly greatly missed, and greatly loved.

Today, photographs capture snapshot images of people gathered at play, acting silly or completely unaware they are being captured in various stages of life; and when we flip through the photo albums we are forever reliving certain moments of life-time like some spirit in an old ghost story. You are looking at relatives that many living family members never met. Yet, images of these faces remain affixed in the album, their names often written in fading pencil on the back of the picture. And, sadly, in some instances, no names were written to identify these people, leaving them mere ghostly reminders of forever lost descendants.

When I look through old photo albums of ancestors that lived long before I was even thought of its like reaching into the past, and maybe that’s why old photos sometimes inspire a certain haunting feeling whenever we touch them. After all, these family members are strangers, beings we have only heard snippets of stories from great grandparents or aunts and uncles who maybe know nothing of these folks at all, but here is their image staring back at you from an old black and white or sepia toned photo in a tattered family album.

Beyond old photographs, we’ve advanced to motion pictures where movie stars like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, or Laurel and Hardy, from the early time of silent film remain alive in old motion pictures though they have been deceased for decades.

As we advance forward in time and with the push of a button the television flickers on and with the click of a remote, dead people such as Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Doris Day, Maureen O’Hara, and a host of others, move and speak across the screen. Still we can see these people repeat their actions from decades ago and possibly on into the future.

Perhaps, people no longer talk about ghosts because in many ways we are surrounded by them. Perhaps, people no long fear ghosts because we have grown accustomed to them.

In my humble opinion, ghosts are things of memory. Humanity has always had memories, dreams and nightmares. Ghostly memories have long haunted and visited people in their sleep and in their thoughts.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, belief in ghosts and unearthly spirits seem to be as old as humans, just like our uncomfortable relationship with our own mortality. Incidentally, while paranormal experiences may provoke fright or adrenaline rushes, they can also provide comfort as proof for life after death. Remember this the next time you open old family photo albums.

So, dear readers, do you believe in ghosts? Well, do you?

As always, take care, stay safe, and Happy Halloween!

Connecting Branches in the Family Tree

Have you traced your ancestry? Discovering our lineage is popular in the U.S. Everyone wants to know where we came from and what our forbears were like. The process is easy. Register with one of the websites or send in a sample of DNA, and in a few weeks, you learn your history.

When I was young, these sites didn’t exist. (Neither did the internet, LOL.) If someone wanted to find out about their predecessors, a genealogy chart was constructed using county records, bibles, and newspaper archives. One of my great uncles developed an interest in researching our clan before I was born. He followed many generations back, compiled all his work into a thick book, made numerous copies, and sent them to all the branches of the family. My mother had one, so I grew up hearing stories about the famous (and infamous) people from our bloodline. When I was old enough, I was allowed to access the book. It’s dry, with fading mimeographed pages and small, arcane symbols, but if read with imagination, the past comes alive.

One of my ancestors was Susannah Martin, who was hanged in Salem in 1692. Another was Cotton Mather, the magistrate who presided over the Salem Witch Trials. When I realized that I am descended from both a woman executed for witchcraft and the judge who sentenced her, my fantasy took flight.

What if this happened to a book protagonist who was a descendant of both accused and accuser? What would she be like? What would make her unique, and what would cause her trouble? What would be the repercussions of the merging of the lines?

The idea became Witch Trial Legacy which releases October 11. The heroine, Sybilla Sanborn, is descended from both the condemned woman and the man who denounced her.

Sybilla has the gift of healing touch from half her heritage. From the other, she receives a curse. She sees visions of future tragedies, but when she tries to warn people, no one will believe her.

Then, she discovers Cassadaga, Florida, home to mediums, psychics, and spiritualists. A medium reveals the source of Sybilla’s problem was transmitted through the generations.

Sybilla must find a way to convince people to heed her warnings.

But when she learns what she will have to do, the cost may be too great.

Everyone has interesting roots. I would love to hear about your antecedents. Respond to this post with a few words about some cool characters from your family tree. Or some terrible ones you wish you weren’t related to.

I’ll pick one person who comments and gift you with a $10.00 Amazon card. C’mon. Brag a little! You know you want to! (Contest closes at midnight July 25, 2021.)

Thank you for joining us on the Pen Dames blog! We appreciate you!

Signs of Spring Fever

Are the neighborhood songbirds trilling more sweetly? Do bright colors have more appeal? Do you have an urge to go on walks or sunshiny drives? If the answer is yes, you likely have spring fever!

Spring fever has a mental component. Our plots and plans increase. Our mood is rash and raring to go. It also has a physical component, based on eons of cyclical history. In the old days, after long winter months of dried meats and root vegetables, our forebears craved fresh green edibles. The digestion needed a jump start, and blood needed purifying. As part of changing seasons, folks contrived remedies known as spring tonics. I remember my grandmother sipping the vitamin-laden “pot likker” from a simmering pot of collard greens. It was “good for what ails you.” She got the remedy from her mother, Kesiah, the lady on the left in the picture.

COLLARD GREENS & POT LIKKER

INGREDIENTS

2 TBSP Oil

A Mess (Pound) of Collard, Mustard, or Turnip Greens

3 Cups Chicken Stock or Water

1-2 Ham Hocks or 8 Slices of Bacon

1 TSP Salt

Pinch of Black Pepper

Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes

1 Chopped Onion

2 Cloves of Garlic

DIRECTIONS

Place oil in a large pot. Add the onion and cook until soft, around 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 50-60 seconds. Add the greens, using a large fork or tongs to get them coated with the onion, garlic, and oil mixture. Add the ham hocks or bacon. Pour the stock or water over the greens and meat. Cover the pot and cook for 45-55 minutes or until the greens are wilted and done to your satisfaction.

SERVING

Dish the greens out into a bowl and ladle in plenty of the liquid pot likker. If you are not low carbing it, add a pone or piece of cornbread to soak up the likker for an extra special treat.

The goddess Epona is a secondary character in Wytchfae Runes and the heroine of Mind Your Goddess. As a goddess of fruitfulness, she embodies the vitality, abundance, and compassionate renewal of spring.

from Wytchfae Runes:

Epona cantered from the forest on a grey and silver dappled horse. Like a revelation of spring, the goddess known for riding side-saddle gracefully guided the unbridled mare. On one slender arm, Epona carried a basket that overflowed with fruits, flowers, and other rich bounty from the earth. Kelly inhaled the scent of roses, cinnamon, and grapes.

Halting just outside the circle near one of the sentinel trees, Epona dismounted, slipping nimbly to the ground.

Kelly leaned forward in an effort to hear the goddess’ few whispered words into the regal and twitching ears of her mount.

Whickering and bobbing her head in apparent understanding, the mare galloped away.

With her ever-present cornucopia swinging at her side, Epona glided toward Kelly.

Never before had the Wytchfae seen Epona so clearly, a vision of abundance. Kelly’s throat pulsated, as much of the energy she used was transmitted through this energy center or chakra.

Epona’s voice reminded Kelly of the taste of honeyed wine. “Sister mine, you have long given me your admiration and dedication. I stand with you on your journey.”

Kelly felt tears brim at Epona’s support.

The goddess continued. “But, as you know, I have no weapons to aid you. As well, I have no great ability in using them. My gifts lie in a different direction.”

Thrilled to have Epona join her and not caring a fig that she wasn’t a warrior goddess, Kelly smiled.

“Shall I come with you, sister?”

Kelly nodded vehemently.

“Then accept this rose quartz crystal as my token.”

“Thank you.” Kelly placed the shimmering gemstone, mounted on a chain of intricately carved rose quartz pieces, around her throat.

“You are most welcome, sister.” Epona moved to stand beside her. The warmth of the goddess spread to Kelly, deepening her trance. She knew she was moving in between worlds now.

Character Interview: Garnet McAnna from Lord of Fire

I'm with the Interstellar Post, and today I'm pleased to interview Garnet McAnna from the paranormal fantasy romance, Lord of Fire, Wytchfae #5.

Ms. McAnna, thank you for meeting with me. Your work in saving innocent fae familiars has been well documented. If you don't mind, today we'll speak on a lighter note. Are you happy with the setting of your story in Lord of Fire?

Call me Garnet. As for the question, are you serious? The Florida locale was fun, but my author wields a sadistic quill where I’m concerned. Not only did she plonk me into a risqué club called Slice to be sold to the highest bidder, but before I could get in a good lip-lock with my hunky guy Gabriel, she stuck me in the Middle Ages during witch-burning times! When I asked her about it, I admit I was a little on the grumpy side. Her reply? “We must give the reader an interesting story.” Then she had the gall to suggest it was Gabriel, me, and the demons who kept on waltzing into trouble. “I’m only a conduit.” Some nerve on that book-broad!

Are you upset your name is not in the title?

Not at all. I love nothing more than to pay tribute to the Lord of Fire, my Gabriel. *breathless pant* However, I will admit that my mind played around with some cute alternative titles. Any of those would have worked if my author hadn’t been secretly gone on my man. Things like Garnet McAnna: Demon Hunter or maybe Garnet Stokes the Fire. *chuckles*

Who was your favorite supporting character?

Anyone but the alligator. Okay, I'll be sincere. Fern is my best friend, of course, and Estelle helped save my life. I must say I enjoyed getting to know Angel, as well. She’s a little madcap, but who wouldn’t be, with a hot rock star boyfriend like Lucien Silver?

Were you happy with your wardrobe?

Meh. I loathed that red slinky dress they put me in at Slice. It was slit from here to Timbuktu in both front and back. Later I got a thrill to see it draped over a chair in ruined tatters. I did love it when my author put me in Gabriel’s blue shirt though. It smelled delicious, just like him. *secret smile*

Is your love interest the way you pictured him? Or would you have preferred another type, say with different hair or eye color?

Never in a million years did I imagine meeting an irresistible dark guardian in the forest at midnight while on my way to hunt down a demon. As for hair, Gabriel has luxurious hair—long, silky in my hands, and black enough to show blue streaks. And his eyes! Gold no less! Other men pale in comparison, let me tell you. Oops, thanks so much for your interest. Gotta go—Gabriel’s texting me to come over and go horseback riding.

No problem. Thank you for your time. Would you ask the Lord of Fire if he'll grant an interview later on?

Will do. See ya! *pants and smiles*

For Garnet and Gabriel's story, please consider Lord of Fire. That's it for now, readers. Stay tuned for more star interviews from the Interstellar Post.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving: Books

Hello Readers, It's that time of year where we struggle to find just the right gift for picky people. Pen Dames is here to help--books...
